Executive Search for Difficult-to-Find Leadership and Specialist Talent

Bedeman Search works with organisations where the talent requirement cannot be solved through conventional recruitment alone.

Our assignments span executive leadership and highly specialised insurance and reinsurance functions across Africa and international markets.

We combine targeted research, market intelligence and direct engagement to identify professionals who are often not actively seeking a move — and who may sit outside the client's immediate geography or existing network.

Explore examples of how we have supported clients with executive appointments, specialist searches and cross-border talent requirements. Client identities are withheld where assignments are confidential.

Creating Value Beyond the Original Executive Search

Executive SearchTalent MappingInsuranceCross-Border Africa

Client

A major pan-African insurance group operating across multiple African markets.

The Challenge

Bedeman Search was engaged on a senior executive search for one of the group's West African operations.

The assignment required us to research a relatively small population of experienced insurance leaders and engage executives who were not necessarily active in the employment market.

The objective was not simply to generate a list of available candidates. It was to understand the leadership market and identify executives with the capability and experience relevant to the organisation.

Our Approach

Bedeman Search conducted executive market mapping and direct search across the relevant leadership population.

As part of this research, we identified and engaged a senior insurance executive who was longlisted against the original mandate.

Although the executive was not ultimately appointed to the position for which he had originally been identified, the engagement gave the client visibility of an individual whose experience had potential value elsewhere within the organisation.

Outcome

The client subsequently appointed the executive into a senior strategic leadership position within another African operation.

The appointment involved a cross-border move and was not the position against which the individual had originally been mapped.

The executive later assumed increased leadership responsibility within the organisation.

What This Demonstrates

The value of executive search can extend well beyond filling a single vacancy.

Effective talent mapping gives an organisation visibility of people it may not otherwise encounter. For businesses operating across multiple countries and business units, that intelligence can create opportunities beyond the original brief.

In this instance, research undertaken for one executive mandate ultimately resulted in a senior leadership hire elsewhere within the group.

Competitor Talent Intelligence in the Reinsurance Sector

Talent IntelligenceCompetitor MappingReinsuranceSouth Africa

Client

A global reinsurance group looking to strengthen its leadership pipeline and market positioning within the South African non-life (P&C) reinsurance sector.

The Challenge

Our client needed more than an org chart. Ahead of a critical planning cycle, their leadership team wanted a clear, evidence-based view of how key competitor organisations in the South African reinsurance market were structured — who was leading underwriting, claims and executive functions, where succession risk sat, and where the market's strongest specialist talent was concentrated. Public sources and LinkedIn profiles could only tell part of the story: the client needed intelligence that was current, verified, and organised in a way their leadership could act on with confidence.

Our Approach

Bedeman Search's talent intelligence team ran a structured mapping exercise across a set of target organisations, combining direct market research with primary-source outreach to build and verify each competitor's leadership and specialist bench.

Every finding was graded by evidence strength — distinguishing confirmed, sourced facts from market intelligence still being corroborated — so the client's leadership could weigh each data point appropriately rather than treat every line as equally certain. Reporting structures were mapped down to functional and reporting-line level, and profiles were built out for the individuals shaping each organisation's underwriting, claims, facultative and treaty capability, with particular attention to employment equity representation and succession-relevant candidates.

The findings were consolidated into a full intelligence report per organisation, then distilled into a concise executive briefing — built specifically for a senior leadership audience — that the client's team could use to walk their own stakeholders through the competitive talent landscape without wading through raw research.

Result

The client's leadership walked into their planning session with a shared, verified picture of the competitive talent landscape — rather than a handful of separate impressions built on fragments of public information.

The evidence-tiered approach meant they could distinguish what was fact from what still needed validation, and act on the mapping with confidence in a fast-moving, relationship-driven market where that distinction matters.

The engagement gave the client a repeatable model for ongoing competitor talent intelligence and positioned Bedeman Search as a trusted partner for nuanced, confidential market mapping that off-the-shelf research tools cannot replicate.

What This Demonstrates

A structured, evidence-tiered view of the market gives senior leadership a stronger basis for planning than fragmented public information alone.

The engagement demonstrates how confidential talent intelligence can clarify competitor structures, specialist capability and succession-relevant talent without reducing the work to a static org chart.
